Women have two fallopian tubes that extend from either side of the uterus and reach towards the ovaries with tiny fringe-like fimbriae. A sperm may fertilize the mature egg on its way to the uterus.
In a normal pregnancy, the fertilized egg implants in the uterus. However, in an ectopic pregnancy, the egg implants in the fallopian tube. This is a life-threatening condition for the mother and must be treated right away.
