AI Diagnoses Major Cancer with Near-Perfect Accuracy, New Study Finds

Imagine a future where cancer can be diagnosed with astonishing accuracy—within seconds. Thanks to artificial intelligence (AI), that future is getting closer.

A groundbreaking new study led by researchers at Charles Darwin University (CDU) and Harvard Medical School reveals that AI can now diagnose a significant type of cancer with near-perfect accuracy

AI Diagnoses Major Cancer with Near-Perfect Accuracy, New Study Finds

What kind of cancer are we talking about?

The cancer in question is endometrial cancer, a type of cancer that begins as a growth of cells in the uterus. It begins in the layer of cells that form the lining of the uterus, called the endometrium. Endometrial cancer is sometimes called uterine cancer.

However, in this study, AI could identify endometrial cancer with a 99.26% accuracy.

How does AI diagnose cancer?

The research team trained an AI model using thousands of tissue images scanned with whole slide imaging, creating high-resolution digital tissue sample versions.

Once trained, the AI could detect cancerous cells with stunning precision. In some cases, it even outperformed human pathologists.

“This is a pivotal step in early cancer detection,” said Dr. Balakrishna Koneru, lead author and CDU Senior Lecturer in Information Technology. “By using AI, we can minimize human error and give patients a better chance at successful treatment.”

Why this matters for women’s health

The implications of this technology are enormous for all cancers—including those that impact women, such as breast, ovarian, and cervical cancers.

Early diagnosis is often the difference between life and death. If AI can help doctors catch cancer sooner, women everywhere stand to benefit from earlier treatments, less invasive procedures, and better long-term outcomes.

Is this AI ready for use?

Not just yet. Researchers emphasize that while these results are promising, the technology must go through clinical validation and regulatory approvals before it can be used widely in hospitals or clinics.

But it’s an exciting sign of what’s to come. Dr. Koneru notes, “The technology could revolutionize how we approach cancer screening and diagnosis.”

What’s next for AI in medicine?

This study adds to a growing body of research suggesting that AI could soon become an indispensable tool in medical diagnostics. From reading Pap smears to interpreting mammograms, AI has the potential to assist OB/GYNs like myself in delivering faster, more accurate diagnoses for women of all ages.
