President and First Lady Biden invited Dr. Aliabadi to the White House last week to celebrate Nowruz (Persian New Year).
Nowruz — “New Day” in Farsi — has celebrated the first day of spring for over 3,000 years. The celebration has its origins in Zoroastrianism and has been celebrated throughout regions like the Balkans, Caucasus, Central Asia, the Middle East, and more.
The White House celebration also had a Haft-Seen table set — a table of seven symbolic things starting with the letter S. Their table included items such as garlic (seer), apples (seeb), wheat grass (sabzeh), and vinegar (sirkeh) as well as a book of wisdom and symbolic items like a mirror and colored eggs.
Dr. Aliabadi lived in Tehran until she was 17. It was a huge honor to get to welcome the Iranian New Year and celebrate the women of Iran.
The Nowruz celebration at the White House this year was also an opportunity for President Joe Biden to pay tribute to the Iranian women and girls fighting for the rights and freedoms.
“This year, Nowruz comes at a difficult time for many families, when hope is needed more than ever — including for the women of Iran who are fighting for their human rights and fundamental freedoms,” President Biden said.
