Halsey’s Early Career and Stage Name
Halsey, born Ashley in 1994, humorously reflects on how common her name was during her school days. “My birth name is Ashley, and, being an Ashley born in nineteen ninety four was like I mean, my name might as well have been John,” she jokes about the abundance of Ashleys in her class.
Her transition from Ashley to Halsey came about creatively. She discovered that “Halsey” is an anagram of “Ashley” while on the L train in Brooklyn. The train’s Halsey stop inspired her stage name during a time when she needed one.
At the age of eighteen, Halsey embarked on her musical journey, writing her first album at nineteen and releasing it as she turned twenty. Music was initially a private passion for her, something she turned to after realizing sports weren’t her forte.
Despite initially aspiring to be a painter and attending art school, she recognized the risks involved in pursuing that path. Instead, she ventured into music and became the pop star we know today.
Importance of Advocacy
In this heartfelt discussion, Halsey opens up about her health challenges and the importance of advocacy for women’s health. Her journey began with a significant turning point when she was diagnosed with endometriosis by Dr. Thais Aliabadi.
Halsey shares her experience of being misdiagnosed with PCOS during high school, a diagnosis given without much explanation or support. It wasn’t until she was nineteen and experiencing severe pain following an IUD insertion that Dr. Aliabadi correctly diagnosed her with endometriosis.
You have endometriosis. I said, I have what? I’d never even heard of it. -Halsey
The conversation delves into the challenges Halsey has faced, including a miscarriage during a concert, highlighting the intense physical and emotional pain she endured while performing for her fans. This experience underscored the lack of accessible information and support available for women experiencing such health issues.
Halsey’s advocacy emphasizes the importance of sharing personal health stories to empower women and encourage them to seek proper medical care. Her openness aims to help women feel less alone in their struggles and to inspire them to become advocates for their own health.

The symptoms she faced were daunting: frequent illness, significant weight loss, joint pain, fatigue, hair thinning, salivary gland swelling, and more. These symptoms intensified after the birth of her son Ender.
The Role of Dr. Wallace
Dr. Dan Wallace played a crucial role in managing Halsey’s health challenges. Known for his expertise in rheumatology, Dr. Wallace’s care has been instrumental in diagnosing and treating Halsey’s conditions. He confirmed her diagnosis of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) after an insightful conversation about the changes she experienced during pregnancy.
Resilience in Adversity
Despite feeling hopeless at times due to the conflicting treatments for lupus and the T-cell disorder, Halsey persevered through pain and uncertainty. Her determination shines through as she navigates these challenges with courage.
Her journey serves as an inspiration to many who are facing their own health battles, highlighting the importance of advocacy and finding supportive care in healthcare professionals like Dr. Wallace.

Her advocacy extends beyond her personal experience as she encourages others to speak about issues like endometriosis and painful periods.
