My friend Dr. Nazanin Daneshmand at MD Periodontics in Beverly Hills are once again tackling this serious topic. She’s recently published a post on the worrying connection between pregnancy gingivitis and the risk of low birth weight and preterm birth.
What’s preterm birth?
Preterm or premature labor is labor that begins less than 37 weeks into a pregnancy. Babies born between 20 and 37 weeks are premature and may have serious long-term health complications.
In a healthy pregnancy, the baby is born between 39 and 41 weeks gestational age. This gives the baby adequate time to fully develop all necessary organ systems.
What’s low birth weight?
A low birth weight baby is born weighing less than 5 pounds 8 ounces. Low birth weight babies are at higher risk of systemic problems and long-term health complications. While preterm babies are usually low birth weight because they were given insufficient time to grow, fetal growth restriction (or intrauterine growth restriction) can prevent a full-term baby from being an appropriate weight.
