Drum roll please… we present to you this year’s fifty most popular baby names!
This is for those of you who are soon to be expecting a child and want some inspiration. Or maybe for those who have a compulsion to always be on top of what is trending, courtesy of the folks over at BabyCenter, where we saw this list.
This collection was compiled by the Social Security Administration from applications for Social Security numbers submitted by new parents on behalf of their infants, so it should be pretty comprehensive.
In case you’re mulling over names not on the beaten path, we suggest that the task of naming be given serious thought. It’s a documented fact that a pair of parents with the last name of Trout named their son Brook. His sisters were named Rainbow and Dolly Varden. Thankfully the Trouts stopped having children before they got to German Brown.
Around here, we have taken to a number of the names on the list, such as the cool spelling of “Jaxon” (boys #31), the PBS inspired “Nova” (girls #46), the outright cool “Niamey” (girls #49) and the timeless “Lincoln” (boys #37).
Perhaps a good rule of thumb would be to project 10, 20, and 40 years into the future. When they reach those ages, are your children likely to be grateful or resentful for the indelible labels you’ve attached to them? In any event, for your careful consideration, here are the top 50 baby names, so far, in 2018, for both boys and girls.
