Menopause is a stage in reproduction that every woman will experience, some earlier than others, some later. Menopause is a normal condition in which the body stops producing the hormones necessary for ovulation.

Women are born with a finite number of eggs, which are stored in the ovaries. The ovaries are also responsible for producing the hormones, estrogen and progesterone, that control menstruation and ovulation. During menopause, the ovaries stop releasing eggs and menstruation stops.

Menopause usually happens after the age of 40. Some women, however, go through menopause early as a result of surgery, such as a hysterectomy, or damage to the ovaries, such as from chemotherapy or injury. When menopause happens before the age of 40, regardless of what caused it, it is called premature menopause. If you are experiencing symptoms of menopause before the age of 40, make an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.
